People who follow the Yogscast may be familiar with this game already, but for those who don't know, Terraria is an open world RPG, similar to Minecraft. And while the game is clearly inspired at least a small bit by Minecraft, there are many differences, and overall, Terraria is the better game in my opinion.
In Terraria, there is much more to do. Minecraft is mostly an exploration and building game, but Terraria is more focused on combat and RPG game-play. There are much more ores, items, and types of areas in Terraria (My favourites being the Underground Jungle and the Floating Islands) Terraria also uses mana in addition to just health, and both can be upgraded. Tons of magic items can be found, and a variety of monsters also populate the world. In Minecraft, once you find diamonds, you are pretty much done unless you want to begin some kind of construction project or just explore. Terraria has much more to do in terms of progression, with increasing your maximum life and mana, and hunting after the powerful endgame items.
Another large difference in the games is the presence of NPCs. In Terraria, you can build houses that NPCs will move in to, and provide services to you. The Merchant, Demolitionist, and Druid are just a few examples. Also, Terraria has a currency system, which you can use to buy items from the various NPCs. Some items you can only get from them.
And perhaps my favourite part of the game are the Boss Fights. In Terraria there are a handful of Bosses, that can be summoned to test your skills and in order to gain unique items from their corpse. All in all, this game is amazing. Here's some gamplay for those who haven't yet seen it.
Also, the water physics actually work.
